Public education and other public events
One of the most important tasks for a fire dept is teaching the people how to prevent fire and what to do when fire strikes. Additional missions are organizing public events, being involved in other public events and being present for the people.
Here is a selection of the public events with the Nipigon Fire Department:
25 Years Award
The following pictures show the Nipigon firefighters getting the 25 year Long Service Award. It was given to them by the Ontario Provincial Government on February 13, 2007.Open House 2006
On November 18th 2006 the Nipigon Fire Department arranged an open house at the fire hall to present the population the new truck.Unfortunately they did not have as much visitors as they liked to have because the weather was very cold. But the kids loved and enjoyed it and liked to hear the siren going and the lights flashing.
Smoke Alarm Survey 2006
Because the government indroduced a new law that came into effect March 1st 2006 that all private homes must have a working smoke alarm on every floor and also outside of sleeping areas Chief Cross decided to run a survey to see how the citizens in Nipigon are doing as far as having smoke alarms already in their homes. He received over 200 responses back and now he will be setting up another program to contact the remaining homes perhaps by telephone to see if they are fire safe. The people who did send in their surveys had a chance to win one of two prizes (A fire extinguisher and a combination smoke alarm and carbon dioxide tester) that the manager of the Canadian Tire Store and his wife, Claude and Claudette Landry and the fire dept donated.
The picture shows them picking the two lucky names from all the surveys:

Labor Day 2005
Here are some pictures of the Kid's Challenge Races the Fire Department had for them on Labor Day Sept 5/05. They were dressed them in turn-out coats from the dept and they had to race through a course and spray a target with water and drag a dummy for 25 m and run to the finnish line . They were timed and the winner got a prize and all the others got a gift bag for participating. There were put 75 kids through the course in one afternoon. They loved it. The members of the dept gave out fire safety pamphets to all that were there as part of the Fire Education Program of the dept.
